The Chand Baori Stepwell is not an easy landmark to find, making it one of India's best kept secrets. You might have seen it in Christopher Nolan's feature film, The Dark Knight Rises and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This truly is a must see when you visit Northern India.
Built during the 8th century by King Chanda of the Nikumbha Dynasty, it is a series of 3,500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry leading down a 20 meter drop to the well below. We found out it was originally built to provide water for areas prone to drought throughout the year.
Unlike centuries ago, the well is no longer used as a water source but it's beauty and etherial geometry draw in wanderers like us and we left feeling charmed by the site.
Set in a tiny village we definitely recommend having a little wonder around the Stepwell. The locals live a simple life eating off the land, grazing their holy cows yet don't seem phased by the tourists flocking through at all.
Being the biggest of it's kind in the world we were captivated by this historical gem. Looking down the steps to the water below, you can just imagine the crowds of women climbing down the steep stairwells to collect water for their families during ancient times. The whole place looks like a maze from a fairytale and is surrounded by a gorgeous courtyard. Women labourers who work on maintaining the buildings walk past carrying heavy bowls of sand on their heads as a balancing act. A true dip into old times.
This mesmerising place was also used as a spot for the locals to gather and socialise. The temperature being cooler inside the well meant it was a perfect place for people to meet and cool off during the heat in the daytime.
